Gastroscopy and Upper GI Endoscopy

Gastroscopy is a very common procedure in Costa Rica – country with the second highest level of stomach cancer in the world.

We have the latest technology with which we view image of the lining of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum – also take tissue samples that will be taken to the pathology department for analysis.

Our primary goal is to rule out the presence of any malignant tissue, look for the Helicobacter Pilory bacteria (cause of gastritis), ulcers and in some cases find gastric cancer.

To be able to perform this procedure, the patient must have had 8 hours of fasting and no blood thinners or anticoagulants for a week. The day of the procedure a nurse takes their medical history and the doctor sits down and explains all aspects of the procedure so that the patient is comfortable and knows what to expect.

An IV line is taken by the nurse and the doctor starts sedation using Midazolam and a Propofol IV to reach a convenient level of sedation. This eliminates any discomfort what so ever.

After the procedure the doctor reviews the information and sits down with you to explain the findings and possible treatment alternatives. He also follows up with you a couple of weeks later to ensure complete recovery.
